Functional Fitness - what does it really mean??
Well for me it means being able to shift a tonne of pebbles from a bulk bag (a bucket at a time) to fill the gaps around the turf in the front garden... yes sorry back to the garden!
It got me thinking about alternative activities and the idea of functional fitness and I wondered how many of you have managed to do something recently that you couldn't have done before you started exercising regularly?
Functional fitness and functional exercise focus on being capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions, not just lifting weight in an idealized posture created by a weights machine at the gym.
I rarely go into a gym and all of my sessions are done using body weight and free weight exercises so this ensures that your whole body is having to work (especially your core muscles) in order to stabilise you and help you maintain your balance while performing the exercise.
This will help you with your day to day activities a few examples include gardening, looking after the kids/ nieces/nephews/grand kids, helping friends move house, I have one example where a client (who has very long hair) can now dry and straighten her hair in one go whereas before she needed to give her arms a rest in between!
